OHV Training: Get your off-highway vehicle (OHV) certification

Safety basics for off-highway vehicle (OHV) tour guides

The OHV training course is now mandatory for all guides operating OHVs, following the adoption of Bill 71 and its regulations, passed on June 16, 2021, and in effect since December 31, 2021. Whether you are a snowmobile, ATVs or side-by-side vehicles guide, this course is essential to ensure safe driving.

 

Course curriculum developed by recognized experts

This snowmobile guide training and OHV course was developed by:

  • CQRHT (Conseil québécois des ressources humaines en tourisme)
  • AEQ label (Aventure Écotourisme Québec)
  • Ministère des Transports of Québec
  • Ministère du Tourisme of Québec
  • FQCQ (Fédération Québécoise des Clubs Quads)
  • FCMQ (Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec)

 

Length of OHV training

A 17-hour theoretical training course (over 2 days), combined with group simulations, that’s followed by a test to qualify for the OHV guide certificate.

 

Who is this training for?

This snowmobile, ATV, side-by-side vehicle or off-road motorcycle (Adventure or Enduro) guide training can be applied to any other off-road vehicle.

The training is intended for:

  • Trail guides
  • Mountain snowmobile guides
  • Expedition guides
  • All guides using snowmobile, off-road motorcycles, SSVs or ATVs as part of their professional activities.
  • OHV training is an absolute must for professional wilderness guides.

OHV training covers the following topics:

  • Risk management
  • Guide profession
  • Regulations
  • Leadership and communication
  • Risk management plan
  • Emergency planning
  • Equipment
  • Communications
  • Maps
  • Feedback
  • Individual action plan

These elements ensure solid expertise for safe guiding on OHV trails.

 

Training rates and conditions

  • Rate at $495 + taxes
  • Access to the final training test requires a first aid course. This first aid course must be at least a 20 hours long one. It must be valid and given in a wilderness or remote area. Red Cross or Sirius certificates are accepted to grant access to the final training test.

 

Mandatory requalifications

For those who took the course 3 years ago or more, a requalification session is now mandatory. This three-hour session followed by an online exam is available at a cost of $145 + taxes. This will enable you to keep your certification up to date and continue to work in full compliance with the regulations.
